Samantha Kingston started as an outcast with no friends. Once she was befriended by the popular, Lindsay Edgecombe, her life started to become exactly as she wanted it. She is not a big family person and is rarely home. She wasn't noticeably mean but not nice at the same time.

Lindsay is the leader of the three friends (Sam, Elody, and Ally.) She is definitely the meanest, yet she is the most confident which is what the other girls love about her. As you read the book, you find out things that make you believe she isn't as put together as she seems.

Ally is another follower of Lindsay's. She is the richest and has a very sensitive personality.

Elody is another follower of Lindsay's. Though her actions don't show it, Sam refers to her as the nicest of the group.

Kent McFuller is an all around nice guy. He may be a little "out there," but he is still just very sweet. He has had a long time crush on Sam, as they were best friends when they were younger (aka Sam's loser stage.) It isn't until later in the book that Sam realizes what a great guy he is, rather than her jock-boyfriend.

Juliet Sykes is a quiet girl whom everyone in the school refers to as "Pshycho." She is a main target of Lindsay's and has let Lindsay walk all over her with a fake rumor since they were kids, thinking it would eventually blow over. Because of all the rumors, Juliet never had any friends and was suicidal throughout the entire book.

 Setting:

The book takes place on February 17th in a sort of smaller Connecticut town. The girls are mainly in their high school, which is just big enough to have hiding spots all around the school. It's also not that far from a few eating places, perfect to ditch and go to. Another important place in this book was Kent Mcfuller's house. It was deep in the back of the woods, where you wouldn't expect such a beautiful mansion to be. His house is perfect for a party, but it's just far enough out there that you would think someone might get hurt....
